This installment: Some helpful website resources for running your business.
In running a business, it can sometimes feel like you are violating about 600 laws every day, even if you are doing your best to do everything by the book. In addition to finding a good accountant, and a good lawyer, there are some things you can check periodically to help you keep up:
The New York Enterprise Report - a new start-up that began in September 2003, this monthly web magazine (and soon to be in print) directly targets small businesses in the New York Metro area, and works to get to the heart of real business problems. And for the moment, it is free.
New York City Government - Yes, it is the government, but they can be helpful at times. Same goes for New York State. These links will guide you to the small business pages.
Refdesk.com - run by Matt Drudge's dad, this is a site that has links to loads of helpful sites. The caveat is that you can get wildly distracted very quickly. Some good resources on the lower part of the page.
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants - While their newsletters can get a little too technical (find out if your CPA will send you their client version which explains things more concisely), another resource that can be helpful is the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, where you can find links for the latest mileage allowance to SIC codes.
Another resource I have used very often is the Nolo Press. Nolo focuses on self-help law and how-to's for small businesses and individuals. Although a some of their content is focused on California specifically, a lot can be useful and they have contract templates that you can customize. You can also check out findlaw.com if you want to look at contracts and corporate documents that other companies have used.
